Frequently Asked Questions

Why a Functional Medicine approach? Functional Medicine is a wellness approach. This approach is an all encompassing one to help prevent, maintain and/or restore the whole-person on a bioindividuality level. We look at the big picture; by being your detective in uncovering potential root causes that maybe negatively impacting your health. The way we do this is by establishing a clinician-client therapeutic relationship that is based on mutual trust and respect for one another. For the first initial appointment a comprehensive health history is taken, we consider your story, we address and identify potential lifestyle and environmental factors, and we identify and organize clients’ internal and external imbalances in consideration of how and why these events may be occurring.

How is a Functional Medicine approach accomplished? We utilize functional medicine tools, such as the Organic Acid Test, genetic testing, functional foods (i.e., therapeutic effects on nutrition), lifestyle (i.e., exercise, relationships) and environmental factors (i.e., toxic exposures to every day products), stress management and mind/body connection (i.e., prayer, mediation) along with supplements and herbs when necessary.  We take a system approach by considering seven biological systems in which core clinical imbalances are found. We take all of this information and create a client-centered protocol that is cohesive to meeting your needs.

How long before I will see results? This depends on several things, such as the severity of your concerns, your commitment to comply, and any adjustment to the plan as we move forward in obtaining functional test and/or elimination diet. When a client follows the nutritional/lifestyle protocol you may start seeing improvement in only 4 to 10 weeks, can take longer. But again, this may depend on the complexity of the issues at hand and most definitely compliance. Keep in mind, it was a process to get you where you are and it will be a process to achieve optimal results.

How many appointments will it take to conclude my plan of action with the clinician? Typically one to three follow-ups to help get you on the right track. The follow up visits will provide you time to ask questions and/or address any concerns you may be having with the initial protocol. In addition, sometimes the initial protocol may need to be adjusted.

Are the clinicians trained on specific diets? We are trained in a multitude of diets and lifestyle plans; I will list a few here. In addition, because of the critical aspects of how important the “right” nutrition is for maintaining and restoring health a whole food healing protocol utilizing the power of foods is a critical part of building a good and healthy foundation for lifelong positive results. The GAPS (addresses leaky gut, gut flora imbalance and nutrient deficiencies), Paleo/AIP (from weight loss to autoimmune), SCD (specific carbohydrate diet- for aiding gut healing), Ketogenic Diet (used when the body burns energy from fats instead of carbohydrates), FODMAP (mostly digestive problems), Mediterranean diet (lifestyle – over all health) and many more. The key point is to address the individual’s needs when it comes to any specific diet for healing and one that will be supportive to the individual’s lifestyle changes. We may not use any one nutrition method; again this depends on the individual persons needs and these needs may change over time.

What can I expect to see if I decide to obtain the functional test? Functional test can cover a vast amount of critical information regarding the state of health your body and brain is experiencing. These are individualized testing options that consider the metabolic function of the body. They are basically utilized in practice as a road-map to help guide the client and practitioner to resolving critical insufficiencies that may be occurring on an individual biochemical level. The lists of testing options vary and can be discussed during consultation. Bottom line is you will see symptom relief of anxiety, depression, chronic pain, insomnia, etc.

How long does it take to get the test results back? Obtaining test results can take from 2 weeks to 6 weeks.

How does food have anything to do with mental health and/or addictions? The first thing we have to consider is that FOOD is the foundation to HEALTH! It is what makes all of our internal clocks tick per say. Without it we cannot exists, so why would it not be the most important foundational factor in both our physical and mental health. However, while some foods can be useful for one person it may end up being poison to another. This is why our approach is critical to “un-root” possible sensitivities that may be wreaking havoc on the individual’s entire ecosystem. Food is the substance used in order to provide a nutritionally sound working internal environment in order to maintain, establish and restore one back to optimal health. Nutrition supports immune system function, neurotransmission regulation, and has the potential to health the gut – which is often found to be essential in brain health.

What does a Functional Nutritionist do? I think we can all agree that “Diets” do not work! A functional nutritionist sees beyond a “diet.” They do not put a person into the typical box that is designed to only address symptoms. We want to know “why” you are having those symptoms so that we can devise a personalized nutrition and lifestyle plan to resolve symptoms and not to just pacify the symptom by covering it up. We use a biochemistry approach to help relief and hopefully eliminate systematic problems related to diagnoses’.

What types of symptoms are associated with food and chemical sensitivity? The following conditions are a partial list to provide you an idea of how you may benefit from one of our cellular test for food and chemical sensitivities. These conditions include: Joints (rheumatoid arthritis, muscle pains), Metabolism (obesity, diabetes, healthy weight loss, and thyroid illness), Respiratory (chronic cough, asthma, and sinusitis), Gut (IBS, diarrhea/constipation/bloating, gastritis, reflux, crohn’s etc), Skin (eczema, psoriasis, rashes, hives, etc), Neurological (migraine, chronic fatigue, ADD etc).

Why do I have food sensitivities? There could be several reasons, but a few of them may be your inability to detoxify, consumption and exposure to potential dangerous chemicals on foods and in the environment, intestinal integrity is being compromised, and immune deregulation resulting in some food particles not being recognized and therefore considered as harmful.

Does genetics play a role in my mental health and addictions? The research that continues to be made available in the area of mental health is truly mind blowing. There are potentially thousands of SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism) and CNVs (Copy Number Variations) that are being linked to potential root causes of many addictive behaviors and psychiatric disorders. These mutations could be the result of an epigenetic factor. Nevertheless, the evidence of the impact on mental health is mounting exponentially.

Do you only work with people in your state and/or the US? No, and this is the beauty of what we do. We can help any one any where. Many practitioners like my self are utilizing tele-wellness platforms to accommodate our client’s busy lives. It is an easy, affordable, and convenient way to engage with our clients on a one to one basis. We love it and so do our clients.

Can you take my medical insurance? We do not accept any form of medical insurance. You may be able to utilize your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA) to pay for consultations fees and/or lab tests, however you will need to ask  who ever handles that for you. We can not answer any of those questions as to who qualifies and who does not.

Why do you not accept medical insurance? Typically most insurance plans do not cover the type of services and products we offer. In addition, our appointments and time spent on each clients care is outside of the typical appointed time that insurance companies are willing to pay for. A clinician who accepts medical insurance may only spend 15-30 minutes with each client, we as functional medicine practitioner may spend several hours in person/over phone/tele-wellness platform with the client as well as several hours preparing a plan of action. We tend to be more available and proactive in meeting and supporting your individual health care needs.

What form of payment do you take? You may pay using a credit card, money order, paypal (paypal has a convenient 6 month interest free program for those who qualify- go to the appointment page to find out more),

What if I do not feel better after a reasonable amount of time? If this should happen and it does, then we will need to investigate further. Additional testing and consultations may be advised. We may need to look into any new potential developments, such as infections. This may also take getting your medical doctor and psychologist involved for further testing that may be beneficial in aiding our progress.

Do I stop taking my medications? NO! Please do not stop taking your medications, unless under the prescribing doctors care to help you do so. However, you must know that you may see a need to reduce and/or eliminate your medications by providing the body what it needs to restore it self, however you could become over medicated. We do not monitor medication elimination/reduction. NOTE: if you are taking the Q-96 supplements and utilizing the third part micronutrient support you will still need to have your prescribing doctor involved in the process.

***Reducing and/or eliminating meds can throw your entire system out of balance and symptoms associated with the medication withdrawal and/or diagnosis may be more pronounced.
